Planning your pet's meals when you'll be away

Plan the care first

Before you leave, work out who will handle your pet's needs while you are away. Meals are only one part of that plan. Water, toilet breaks, company and any individual care instructions still need attention.

Arrange a responsible person to visit or provide care when needed. Share clear instructions, contact details and a backup plan if you are delayed. A feeder is not a substitute for that person.

Prepare the usual meal

Portion food according to your pet's existing feeding plan. Label it for the person helping, including when it should be offered. Follow the food label's storage instructions; do not assume food can sit out for the length of your absence.

Check equipment while you're home

If you use a timed feeder, read its instructions and test it with your pet present before relying on it. Check the timer, power source and opening mechanism, and watch whether your pet can reach the food. Follow its limits for food type and storage.

Make sure your pet has accessible fresh water and ask the caregiver to check it. A spare bowl can be useful, but it does not replace a visit or a contingency plan.

Decide in advance who will step in if plans change or the equipment does not work.
