A simple evening play routine for your cat

Start small

Set aside a short time when you can stay with your cat. Choose a toy intended for cats, read its instructions and check it for loose or damaged parts before you begin.

Move a wand toy along the floor with room to follow it. Pause so your cat can approach or catch it. Let them choose whether to join in, and stop if they walk away or seem uncomfortable. There is no need to complete a set number of minutes.

Change one thing

Try a different direction, a pause or another suitable toy. If you use a tunnel, check its condition and keep the play area clear. Stay nearby throughout the session.

Rotate toys occasionally if you want variety. You do not need a large collection or a new purchase for every play session.

Put toys away

Store wand toys, strings, chews and loose pieces out of reach when play ends. Do not leave them out overnight as a way to occupy your cat while you sleep.

Keep meals consistent with your cat's usual feeding plan rather than adding food to promise sleep. This routine is an opportunity to spend time together, not a guarantee of a quiet night. If a change in your cat's behavior worries you, contact your veterinarian.
